Why public LiDAR works

RANSAC plane fitting
Each roof is a set of planes. We fit them to LiDAR returns, then snap edges to dominant directions and shared intersections. CAD-crisp output, not blobby polygons.

Footprint-snapped
Microsoft Building Footprints align the roof perimeter to the actual house. Eaves and rakes hit the real building line, not a LiDAR-sampled approximation.

Auditable provenance
Every packet prints the LiDAR tile ID, acquisition date, USGS project name, and extractor commit. Reviewers can verify the source.

Cathedral, turret, octagonal, parapet commercial, and mobile homes fall outside our residential pitched-roof scope. We flag for manual review or decline the packet.
