Look Up Property ZonesMobile and Baldwin counties are Alabama's designated coastal zone under the Alabama Coastal Area Management Program (ACAMP), administered by the Alabama Department of Conservation and Natural Resources. ACAMP coordinates with FEMA, Army Corps of Engineers, and local governments on coastal development. Construction in the coastal zone may require additional permits, setbacks, and environmental reviews beyond standard building permits.
New Hampshire has 18 miles of Atlantic coastline, entirely within Rockingham County. Coastal communities include Portsmouth, Rye, Hampton, Hampton Falls, Seabrook, New Castle, and North Hampton. Subject to coastal storms, nor'easters, storm surge, wave action, and sea level rise. Tidal rivers and estuaries extend the coastal influence zone inland. Great Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve adds environmental sensitivity.
HVHZ and Wind-Borne Debris Regions require impact-rated glazing, reinforced roofing, and continuous load paths per Florida Building Code Chapter 44.
FEMA flood zones (A, AE, V, VE, X) determine elevation requirements, flood venting, and foundation design. V-Zones require breakaway walls.
WUI zones require ignition-resistant construction including Class A roofing, fire-resistant siding, and ember-resistant vents per California Chapter 7A.
Historic districts may require design review, restrict material changes, and have preservation standards that supersede standard code provisions.
Coastal high hazard areas (V-zones and VE-zones) along Maine's approximately 3,478-mile Atlantic coastline (including islands). Subject to wave action, storm surge, and velocity flooding. Affects coastal portions of York, Cumberland, Sagadahoc, Lincoln, Knox, Waldo, Hancock, and Washington counties. Maine is exposed to powerful nor'easters that can produce hurricane-force winds and significant storm surge. Climate change is increasing coastal flood risk.
California coastal county subject to the California Coastal Act of 1976 (Public Resources Code § 30000 et seq.) administered by the California Coastal Commission (CCC). The Coastal Zone extends from the Oregon border to the Mexico border, varying in width from a few hundred feet in urban areas to several miles in rural areas. Coastal Development Permits (CDPs) are required for most development within the Coastal Zone. California has approximately 840 miles of coastline. Local Coastal Programs (LCPs) are adopted by local governments and certified by the CCC to implement the Coastal Act locally. After LCP certification, most permit authority transfers to local government, with the CCC retaining appellate jurisdiction.
Coastal Area Facility Review Act (CAFRA) jurisdiction covering 239 municipalities along Atlantic coast and tidal waterways. NJDEP permit required for regulated development activities.
The California Coastal Act requires Coastal Development Permits (CDP) for development within the Coastal Zone. The Coastal Zone extends inland varying distances from the shoreline. Affects 15 coastal counties.
